“Why Athletes Should Train Year Round”
By Coach Mosess Menendez

As a S&C coach with over 20 years in strength training I’ve noticed a big change in our athletes today where training year round is now an essential for them. Training year round can help athletes develop skills, improve their performance, and avoid injuries. Most athletes who follow a well structured program also develop athleticism which carries over to their respective sport.

Growing up and now coaching in Northern New Jersey has shown me that most athletes by 10th grade will mainly focus on one sport which really limits their athleticism but will help them be more consistent. Training consistently allows athletes to hone in on their skills and improve their fitness level which is always important for their mental health. When an athlete is physically strong and mentally strong it will help improve their overall performance which is a key of a successful athlete.

Training year round can also help athletes develop movement qualities and strength that are specific to their sport. For example, endurance training can help athletes perform well when they’re fatigued, which can be important in the final moments of a competition. Speed training is important for an athlete as the quote is always true
“speed kills & speed wins”.

Agility training can help athletes improve their body control and decrease their risk of injury. Avoiding injuries with training year round can help athletes maintain their strength, mobility, and power, which can make them less likely to get injured. It takes time and consistency to develop. Training year round exposes the athlete to the weight room on a consistent basis that allows them to learn, refine and develop in the weight room but also movement qualities that are specific to becoming a better athlete.

In conclusion, the benefits of year-round training for athletes extend far beyond mere physical prowess. By committing to a consistent training regimen, athletes not only enhance their performance but also cultivate resilience and mental fortitude that are crucial for success in competitive environments. The integration of strength, endurance, speed, and agility training throughout the year not only prepares athletes for the demands of their specific sports but also fosters a holistic approach to physical fitness.

Moreover, as athletes transition through different phases of their training, they become more adaptable and versatile, which is essential in today’s increasingly competitive landscape. Emphasizing year-round training promotes a culture of discipline, dedication, and continuous improvement, setting the stage for long-term success.

As coaches, parents, and mentors, it’s vital to encourage young athletes to embrace this year-round approach. By doing so, we not only help them achieve their immediate goals but also equip them with valuable life skills that will serve them well beyond their athletic careers. The journey of an athlete is not just about winning games; it’s about developing a well-rounded individual capable of facing challenges both on and off the field. Let’s commit to fostering a generation of athletes who train year-round, paving the way for their success in sports and life
